Will Insurance Cover Augmentative Speech Devices

January 27th 2012 -

Parents of autistic children know all too well the financial hardship the disability can have on the family; however, most parents will do whatever it takes to see that their child has what they need to develop as fully as possible. Augmentative speech devices can range in price from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, depending on what is selected. Many of these children have little or no insurance or are on state Medicaid programs and so their device may or may not be covered under these policies. As a parent, you have to research your program and find out whether or not you will be covered. You may find that your insurance will cover communication devices within a certain price range. If this is the case, you should ask if you can simply make the difference up out of pocket. Many state insurance programs have started covering these devices and you should make sure you check this as well. Insurance is a tricky and often confusing program, check with your carrier and find out if your child’s augmentative communication device is covered before you purchase it.
